Many conditions can cause ear pain. The most common cause of ear pain is an ear infection.
Chronic sinusitis is an infection of the sinuses that lasts more than three months. Symptoms can include nasal blockage, nasal discharge, symptoms of facial pain and headaches, congestion, postnasal drip and altered sense of smell.
Ear canal infections (acute otitis externa) occur when either a bacteria or fungus infects the skin of the ear canal. This causes severe pain in the ear with hearing loss, buzzing, itching and a discharge.
Hearing loss is caused by a variety of conditions affecting the hearing organ or its nerve connection to the brain.
A blocked nose is often uncomfortable and difficult to tolerate. It can often go untreated and cause unpleasant side effects when patients have to breath through their mouths – side effects can include excessive dryness in the mouth, which can damage the gums, and sometimes cause drooling. Sense of smell and taste can also be affected. Snoring can also be a consequence of a blocked nose.
If a neck swelling or lump appears with no corresponding infection, it is wise to have this urgently investigated.
